[00:00:16] Speaker A: Greetings, readers. Welcome to the second episode of our October 2024 Library News. As the leaves change color and harvest season begins, we celebrate the beauty of the season. Join us as we explore fantastic fall reads and cozy up with a good book. [00:00:34] Speaker B: For this month's d list spotlight, we transition to October with curated selections of must read books. This month's feature is creepy creatures, witches, pumpkins, and grinning ghosts. The story of Halloween symbols DB 53631 the history of many Halloween traditions such as witches and goblins, bats and owls, jack o'lanterns, and trick or treating. A Discovery of witches by Deborah Harkness, DB 72629 after scholar in which Diana Bishop requests an alchemy manuscript from the depths of Oxford's bodleian library, she finds the magical power within the leather cover disturbing and hastily sends it back. But the book's re emergence causes a chain reaction through the paranormal community. Coraline by Neil Gaiman, DB 54 845 while exploring her new home, Coraline goes through a doorway that shouldn't be there, into a dangerous world where she has a disturbingly different set of parents. Since this other mother kidnaps Coraline's real parents, it is up to coraline to rescue them and return to her world safely. Never whistle at night, an indigenous dark fiction anthology edited by Shane Hawke and Theodore C. Van Els, Junior, DB 1172 62 a bold, clever, and sublimely sinister collection of horror, fantasy, science fiction, and gritty crime by both new and established indigenous authors that dare to ask the question, are you ready to be unsettled? This belief ranges far and wide and takes many forms. For instance, native Hawaiians believe that it summons the hu kaipo, the spirits of ancient warriors, and native Mexicans say it calls a leshuza, a witch that can transform into an owl and snatch the foolish whistlers in the dark. But what all these legends hold in common is that the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear and even follow you home. And 25 wholly original and shiver inducing tales, best selling and award winning authors including Tommy Orange, Rebecca Roanhorse, Sherri Demoline, Wab Shig Rice, and Mona Susan Power introduce readers to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge. Introduced and contextualized by best selling author Stephen Graham Jones, these stories are a celebration of indigenous people's survival and imagination and a glorious reveling in all the things an ill advised whistling might summon. [00:03:40] Speaker C: The BFG by Roald Dahl, DB 44 101 Sophie is taken from her orphanage by a big, friendly giant BFG, who enjoys dream blowing, sending happy dreams to children with his magical trumpet. Together they devised a plan to save the world from nine people eating cannibal giants. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling, DB 9229 on Harry Potter's 11th birthday, he learns that he's more than an unwanted orphan. The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and wizardry recruits him because he has inherent magical abilities. As he purchases his school supplies, robes, wand, and messenger owl, Harriet looks forward to attending his new boarding school. A court of thorns and roses by Sarah Jennae Moss, DB 81722 dragged to a treacherous magical land, 19 year old huntress Feyre discovers that her captor isn't an animal, but Tamerlin, a high lord of the fairies. Her feelings for him become complicated. [00:05:26] Speaker A: The last wish introducing the Witcher by Andrzej Sabakowski, DB 9620. Geralt is a witcher with magic powers that have made him a brilliant fighter and merciless assassin. His targets are monsters that ravage the land and attack the innocent. But not everything monstrous looking is evil, and not everything fair is good. Monster Hunter International books one three by Larry Korea, DB 80117 books one three in the Monster Hunter International series, which feature a group of creature hunters at a premier eradication company. In Monster Hunter International, CPA Owens the Stava Pitt tosses his crazed boss out the window and wakes up in a hospital to an odd job offer. Stormfront by Jim Butcher, DB 67,342 Chicago Harry Dresden, a wizard for hire specializing in paranormal investigations, helps the police probe the murders of mob enforcer Tommy and Tommy's lover Jennifer, an escort who worked for a powerful vampire. Clues indicate rogue sorcery, but there are no leads and no suspects. [00:06:51] Speaker B: October's magazine of the month is National Geographic. This publication provides articles on world geography and cultures, plant and animal life, space exploration and ancient history. It is available in multiple formats, audio and cartridge, hard copy braille mailed to you or downloadable in braille through Bard. It is published monthly. [00:07:16] Speaker C: This month's tech tip is going to be about ways to help you find books in a series. We will look at how to do this on the Bard website and on bard mobile. So let's get started. First we will look at the Bard website. We will go to NLS bard Loc dot gov and sign in. Once you are signed in, we are going to do a search for a book in the series you are looking for. Your results will show as normal, but instead of pressing download book, we will select the book title instead. This will bring us to a new page with the information about the book. Next we will need to find series below the title, author and subjects. Here we can select the series name to then have all the books pull up in order on a new page. Next we will look at Bard Mobile. We can do this with a book we are seeing in the book search or a book that we already downloaded to our bookshelf. Once you find the book you want the series of, we will press on the more info button which looks like a little I in a circle. This will bring up the details section. In the upper right corner there is a more actions button which looks like three dots in a circle. This will bring up a list of actions like all books by this author, all books in the subject, and all books in the series. After selecting all books in the series option, it will bring up a search result page that will have all the books in the series in order. Hope this helps those looking for all the books in the series hey everyone. [00:09:21] Speaker A: It'S Angie here with this month's deaf spotlight. I want to talk to you about one of my all time favorite authors, Sarah J. Maasdev. I first discovered her about six years ago when a co worker and I were chatting about our favorite books. They recommended starting with Throne of Glass, and let me tell you, that was the start of a full blown obsession. I zoomed through the entire Throne of Glass series, which has seven books plus a novella. The character development is incredible. We watched the protagonist, Selina Sardothian, evolve from a fierce assassin into a powerful leader, all while navigating a world filled with magic, betrayal and romance. After that, I jumped into a court of Thorn and Roses series, which currently has five books. This one reimagines classic fairy tales with moss unique twist and features amazing characters like Feyre Archeron, who goes through some serious transformations as she fights for survival in a beautifully crafted world. The Crescent City series actually just released its third book this year. This series has a more contemporary fantasy vibe, mixing urban elements with moss trademark high stakes drama and intricate lore. The themes of friendship, love and battling darkness really resonate, making it impossible to put down. I even managed to get my sister hooked on her books. What I love most about Sarah J. Maas is how she creates complex yet relatable characters who face real struggles and triumphs. Her plots are packed with unexpected twists that keep you guessing and craving more. Plus, her writing is so immersive and inspired, it pulls you right into the heart of the story. Sarah J. Maas isn't just an author, she's a master storyteller who brings to life worlds you never want to leave. I can't wait to see what other amazing stories she has in store for us.
