[00:00:17] Speaker B: Readers and welcome to the second episode of our September 2026 Library News. September is here, bringing cooler days, changing leaves, and the first hints of fall.
It's the perfect time to settle in with a good book and enjoy the cozy feeling that comes with the changing season.
In today's episode, we're featuring our D List. Fall Into a Good Book. Leland is back with another helpful tech tip, and Josh is this month's Staff Spotlight. So get comfortable, grab your favorite fall drink, and let's get started.

Fall Into a Good Book the House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Colune, DB 98951 as a caseworker at the department in charge of magical Youth, Linus Bakers spends his days overseeing the well being of children in government sanctioned orphanages. He is unexpectedly given a highly classified assignment. Travel to a remote island orphanage where six dangerous children reside.
The Book Shop on the Corner By Jenny Colgan, DB8665 Downsizing has left English librarian Nina out of a job, but she is not willing to give up on her love of finding people their perfect book. While on vacation in a small village in Scotland, she impulsively buys a van and opens a mobile bookshop.
The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katerina Bivalt, DB83448 After Swedish immigrant Sarah loses her bookstore, she decides to visit her pen pal, Amy in the small Iowa town of Broken Wheel. She arrives only to find that Amy has recently died. Sarah decides to stay on and open a bookstore in her friend's memory.

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner, DB1002587 in 18th century London, Nella runs an apothecary shop selling well disguised poisons for women to use against the oppressive men in their lives. Meanwhile, in present day London, aspiring historian Caroline stumbles upon a clue to the long unsolved apothecary murders while dealing with the failure of her marriage.
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michelle Richardson, DB 95243 Kentucky 193619 year old Cussy Mary Carter has been working as part of the Pack Horse Liberty Project, but her father hopes she'll marry despite the family trait of blue skin. In addition to her father's hopes, Cussy must also face the prejudice of the community she serves.

In the book she recorded the names of the Jewish children she helped forge new identities for during the war, and she reflects the Wedding Dress Sewing Circle By Jennifer Ryan, DB1089093 Plucky women lift the spirits of home front brides in wartime Britain, where clothes rationing leaves little opportunity for pomp or celebration, even at weddings, in this heartwarming novel based on true events from the best selling author of the Chilbury Ladies Choir.
After renowned fashion designer Cressetta Westcott loses both her home and her design house in the London Blitz, she has nowhere to go but the family manor house she fled decades ago, praying that her niece and nephew will be more hospitable than her brother had been. She arrives with nothing but the clothes she stands in, at a loss as to how to rebuild her business while staying in a quaint country village, her niece, Violet Westcott, is thrilled that her famous aunt is coming to stay.
The village has been interminably dull, with all the men off fighting, but just as Cressinda arrives, so does Violet's conscription letter. It couldn't have come at a worse time. Before long, Krisinda's spirit and ambition galvanizes the village group into action, and they find themselves mending wedding dresses not only for local brides but for brides across the country.
And as the women dedicate themselves to helping others celebrate love, they might even manage to find it for the Night Circus by Aaron Morgenstern, DB73783 at the Circus of Dreams, magicians Celia and Marco are pitted against each other in an epic magical battle. Their mentors plan for it to have only one survivor, not foreseeing that Celia and Marco will fall in love.
[00:08:27] Speaker C: September's magazine of the Month is the New Yorker. With 52 issues published a year, the New Yorker is available in digital audio, on cartridge, or as a digital download through Bard. The magazine features timely articles covering a wide range of topics along with short fiction, poetry and cartoons.
[00:08:45] Speaker A: Greetings readers. Leland here with another tech tip as we move into fall, some of the NLS machines are receiving some Updates. Both the NLS E Reader and DA2 will have updates that you will need to install. The following is true for either machine if you have the device hooked up to your Internet when a new update comes up, it will automatically download. When it is ready, the machine will ask you if you would like to install the update, confirming this message will start the update. This action may take a few minutes and it is encouraged to have your machine plugged in to the wall when you are updating. Alternatively, if you don't get the prompt to update or you feel like you may have missed it, you can navigate into settings and locate the software update. One of the top options is to check for an update. Pressing this will start the process as well. For patrons who don't use wi fi on their machines, you may call us and we can send out the update on a cartridge. When you have the cartridge, you simply plug it into the player ral on and it will prompt to update. Now. Keeping your machine up to date ensures smooth performance and access to all the
[00:10:13] Speaker C: latest features Hello Josh here with this month's Staff Spotlight. I just finished reading the book the Chronicles of Doom by S.H. fernando Jr. It's a biography of MF Doom, one of music's most mysterious and influential artists. The book tells the story of Doom's life and career while also explaining how he created a character and a mythology that became an important part of his music.
The book focuses heavily on Doom's albums and collaborations.
Each project is discussed in the context of where he was in his career, what he was doing creatively, and how it helped shape his sound and different Personas, which gives readers a better understanding of how Doom developed and evolved as an artist throughout his career. The book also explores some of the more personal parts of Doom's life, including the death of his brother, his time in bcdc, his immigration problems, and his later years living in the United Kingdom. The author draws on interviews with people who knew and worked with Dume to provide a more personal look at the different periods of his life. The Chronicles of Doom covers the influences that helped shape Doom, including comic books, movies and popular culture, without getting bogged down in unnecessary details. Overall, readers will get a closer look at MF Doom's life, music, and the creative ideas behind one of Hip hop's most unique artists, bringing together his story, his music, and the many influences that helped shape the artist he became. While we don't have the Chronicles of Doom in our collection, we do have several biographies featuring influential figures from the music industry.

[00:11:59] Speaker B: this one, save the date the Library is thrilled to welcome visitors to an Extraordinary Multi Sensory Journey through Space.
We are proud to announce that the Experience the Cosmos, the James Webb Space Telescope Traveling Tactile Exhibit will be on display in our building from September 1414 through December 21, 2026. This exhibition was developed by Tactile Images in association with the National Federation of the Blind and Getty images and was created in collaboration with the Space Telescope Science Institute.
The exhibit features 10 tactile renderings of images captured by the James Webb Space Telescope and is paired with audio commentary from astronomers and scientists.
The exhibition offers visitors of all ages a chance to explore the farthest reaches of the universe through both touch and sound. Beginning September 14th, the exhibit will be open Mondays from 8:00am to 8:00pm, Tuesday through Fridays 8:00am To 4:30pm and the first Saturday of October, November and December 9:00am To 1:00pm.
On Saturday, October 3rd, we will host a grand opening celebration from 9:00am to 1:00pm featuring Hands on activities including an arts project led by artist Jill Wells.
[00:13:21] Speaker A: The Library will also partner with the South Central STEM Hub Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council to host a fully accessible STEM Fest on October 24, 2026 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm this event will will feature hands on science, technology, engineering and math activities designed so participants of all abilities can join in to discovery and fun.
