[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. [00:00:14] Speaker B: Readers welcome to the first January edition of Library News. We hope everyone had a nice holiday. Welcome to 2025. During the month of January, we are highlighting all things Braille in celebration of Louis Braille's birthday and World Braille Day. On January 4, the library honored Louis Braille with a Braille Bash where patrons could come in person or via Zoom. It was a good morning of snuggling up with your favorite book and also exploring the world of Braille. Stay tuned for more Braille highlights throughout the month. [00:00:51] Speaker C: Now for the top 10 fiction books downloaded from Bardeep a Reacher novel DB122 by Lee Child and Andrew Child Reacher had no idea where he was, no idea how he'd gotten there. But someone must have brought him and shackled him. And whoever had done those things was going to rue the day. That was for damn sure. Jack Reacher wakes up alone in the dark, handcuffed to a makeshift bed. His right arm has suffered some major damage. His few possessions are gone. He has no memory of getting there. The last thing Reacher can recall is the car he hitched a ride in getting run off the road. The driver was killed. His captors assume Reacher was the driver's accomplice and patch up his wounds as they plan to make him talk. A plan that will backfire Spectacularly. The waiting DB124746 by Michael Conley Detective Renee Ballard, with new volunteer Maddy Bosch, investigates a serial rapist linked through DNA to a man recently arrested. The suspect's father, the infamous Pillowcase rapist, is a long, silent terror. As Ballard faces legal hurdles and her badge is stolen, she must seek help from Harry Bosch. Meanwhile, Maddie's ulterior motives come to light as she joins Ballard's cold case unit, complicating the investigation further. A Novel DB12 4452 Nicholas Sparks Tanner Hughes was raised by his grandparents, following in his grandfather's military footsteps to become an Army Ranger. His whole life has been spent abroad, and he is a proverbial Rolling Stone happiest. When off on his next adventure, zero desire to settle down. But when his grandmother passes away, her last words to him are, find where you belong. She also drops a bombshell, telling him the name of the father he never knew and where to find him. Tanner is due at his next posting soon, but his curiosity is piqued and he sets out for Asheboro, North Carolina, to ask around. He's been in town less than 24 hours when he meets Caitlin Cooper, a doctor and single mom. They both feel an immediate connection. Tanner knows Caitlyn has a story to tell and he wants to hear it. To Caitlin, Tanner is mysterious, exciting and possibly leaving in just a few weeks. Meanwhile, nearby 83 year old Jasper lives alone in a cabin bordering a national forest with only his dog Arlo for company. He lives quietly, haunted by a tragic accident that took place decades before. When he hears rumors that a white deer has been spotted in the forest, a creature of legend that inspired his father and grandfather, he becomes obsessed with protecting the deer from poachers. As these characters fates orbit closer together, none of them is expecting a miracle, but that may be exactly what is about to alter their futures forever. [00:03:40] Speaker D: The Christmas in A Novel DB 124450 by Pamela M. Kelly Riley Sanders didn't plan on losing her job as a content marketing manager right before Christmas. When she calls her sister Amy to vent, she learns that their mother has broken her leg and can really use some help at the Inner. Riley decides to head home to the inn nestled along the shores of Cape Cod in time for the Christmas rush. She is happy to help and needs something to distract her as mistletoe is hung and snowflakes begin to fall. When she gets there, she not only finds delicious cookies and a crackling fire to lift her spirits, but also the sense of family she's been missing all along. There's Fanny, a woman who has just lost her sister and has four unopened letters from her that she plans to use to open up her new experiences on the cape. And there's Aiden, her high school sweetheart, now a widower, who is staying at the inn with his nine year old son, Luke. What begins as a quick stay over the holidays to help her mom turns into something that means much more a second chance at romance, a deeper sense of found family, and all the joy and wonder that comes with Christmas time on Cape Cod. Shadow of doubt a thriller DB123803 by Brad Thor A mysterious cargo plane flanked by a squadron of Russia's most lethal fighters has just taken off from a remote air base closely monitored by the United States. No one inside the Pentagon has any idea where it's going or what it's carrying. A high level Russian defector, a walking vault of secrets that could shatter the west, seeks asylum in Norway. Across the continent, in the heart of Paris, a lone French agent stumbles upon a conspiracy so explosive it could ignite a global firestorm. As alarm bells ring In Washington, the CIA's most lethal weapon, Scott Harveth, is forced to choose between his conscience and his country. You'll be left breathless as Harveth is swept into a whirlwind of double agents, international intrigue and heart stopping chases Passions in death DB123948 by J.D. robb On a hot August night, Lt. Eve Dallas and her husband Roark speed through the streets of Manhattan to the down and Dirty club where a joyful boisterous pre wedding girls night out has turned into a murder scene. One of the brides lies in a pool of blood, garrotted in a private room where she was preparing a surprise for her fiance. Two scrimped and saved for tickets to Hawaii. Despite the dozens of people present, useful witnesses are hard to come by. It all brings back some bad memories for Eve, who once suffered an assault in the very same room. But she'd been able to fight back and survive. She'd gotten justice and now she needs to provide some for poor young Erin. Eve knows that the level of violence and the apparent premeditation involved so suggest a volatile mix of hidden heated passion and ice cold calculation. This is a crime that can be countered only by hard detective work and relentless dedication. And Eve will not stop until she finds the killer who destroyed this couple's dreams before the honeymoon even began. After death DB 1212646 by Dean R K Michael Mace, head of security at a top secret research facility, opens his eyes in a makeshift morgue 24 hours following event in which everyone perished, including him and his best friend Shelby Shrewsbury. Having awakened with an extraordinary ability unlike anything he or anyone else has ever imagined, Michael is capable of being as elusive as a ghost. He sets out to honor his late friend by helping Nina Dozier and her son John, who whom Shelby greatly admired. Although what Michael does for Nina is life changing, his actions also evoke the wrath of John's father, a member of one of the most violent street gangs in Los Angeles. But an even greater threat is descending. The Internal Security Agency's most vicious assassin, Durand Caliphas Caliphas will stop at nothing to get his man. If Michael dies twice, he will not live a third time. From the tarnished glamour of Beverly Hills to the streets of South Central to the walled estate of Rancho Santa Fe, only Michael can protect Nina and John and ensure that light survives in a rapidly darkening world. [00:08:24] Speaker B: This is why We Lied DB124323 by Karen Slaughter for FBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sarah Linton, McAlpine Lodge seems like the ideal getaway to celebrate their honeymoon. Set on a gorgeous off the grid mountaintop property, it's the perfect place to unplug and reconnect until a bone chilling scream cuts through the night. Mercy Alpine, the manager of the lodge, is dead. With a vicious storm raging and the one access road to the property washed out, the murderer must be someone on the mountain. But as Will and Sarah investigate the McAlpine family and the other guests, they realize that everyone here is lying. Lying about their past, lying about their family, lying to themselves. It soon becomes clear that normal rules don't apply at McAlpine Lodge and will and Sarah are going to have to watch their step every turn. Trapped on the resort, they must untangle a decades old web of secrets to discover what happened to Mercy. And with the killer poised to strike again, the trip of a lifetime becomes a race against the clock. The Lost Coast A Novel DB 123155 by Jonathan Kellerman and Jesse Kellerman it's been almost a year since Clay Edison was forced out of his job at the Coroner's Bureau. Now he's on his own, working as a private eye. Clay has brought a fraud case that begins with a man surprised to learn that he's been named the executor of his grandmother's estate. Her accounts are a mess and not everything is adding up as Clay dives deeper into a decades old scheme targeting the vulnerable. His investigation leads him to a bizarre town buried in the remote California wilderness. The residents don't care much for outsiders. They certainly don't like Clay asking questions and they'll do just about anything to shut them up. Identity unknown DB 124688 by Patricia Cornwell Summoned to an unnerving, abandoned theme park to retrieve a body, Dr. K. Scarpetta is devastated to learn that the victim is a man she once loved while teaching in Rome. During the early days of her career, Scarpetta had an intense love affair with Sal Giordano that led to a lifelong friendship. The murder scene is bizarre, with a cropped circle of petals around the body and Giordano's skin is strangely red. Scarpetta's niece Lucy believes he was dropped from an unidentified flying craft. Scarpetta knows an autopsy can reveal the dead's secrets, but she is shocked to find her friend seems to have deliberately left her a clue. As the investigators are torn between suspicions of otherworldly forces and of Giordano himself, Scarpetta detects an explanation closer to home that in her mind is far more evil.
