[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreigners welcome to the second episode of our June 2025 library news. Summer's officially kicked off and trust us, you won't want to miss what we have in store for you at the library. We're starting strong with our special D list for June Small Town Charmers. After that, Leland's got an awesome tech tip you'll love. Our staff Spotlight this month features none other than the library's own fearless leader, Sarah. And of course, we'll wrap things up with a rundown of all the fantastic events happening. Let's jump in exciting news for patrons of the Iowa Library for the Blind and Print Disabled. We are part of the NLS pilot program that is offering patrons the new digital talking book machine, DA2. The DA2 boasts significant upgrades including built in WI Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, along with a substantial 28 gigabyte of internal storage. This means users can now directly connect to Bard, nls, Braille and audio reading. Download to easily download audiobooks and magazines, store them on the device and enjoy listening through Bluetooth enabled speakers or headphones, offering an even more convenient and seamless reading experience. Give the library a call at 515-281-1323 if you'd like to be a part. [00:01:36] Speaker B: Of this pilot program for this month's D List. Spotlight Small Town Charmers the Book Charmer By Karen Hawkins DB12 4795 Sarah Dove is no ordinary bookworm. To her, books have always been more than just objects. They live, they breathe, and sometimes they even speak. When Sarah grows up to become the librarian in her quaint southern town of Dove Pond, her gift helps place every book in the hands of the perfect reader. Recently, however, the books have been whispering about something out of the ordinary the arrival of a displaced city girl named Grace Wheeler. If the books are right, Grace could be the savior that Dove Pond desperately needs. The problem is Grace wants little to do with the town or its quirky residents, Sarah chief of them. It takes a bit of urging and the help of especially wise book, but Grace ultimately embraces the challenge to rescue her charmed new community. In her quest, she discovers the tantalizing promise of a new love, the deep strength that comes from having a true friend, and the power of finding just the right book. Fine Art of Faking It A Small Town Love Story By Lucy Score, DB106338 Eden is proud to own Blue Moon's only innocent, but she has the misfortune of sharing a property line with Davis, the crush who broke her teenage heart. The town's matchmakers are determined to end their feud, but Eden and Davis aren't going down easy. Virgin river by Robin Carr, DB 700659 Mel Monroe, the young, widowed LA based nurse practitioner accepts a job site unseen in tiny Virgin River. Shocked by less than stellar accommodations, Mel contends with a dilapidated cottage and an unwelcoming old doctor. But ex Marine and tavern owner Jack Sheridan is glad she arrived. [00:04:35] Speaker C: All roads lead here By Mariana Zapata, DB10 9042 Losing people you love is hard. Aurora de la Torre knows moving back to a place that was once home isn't going to be easy. Starting your whole life over probably isn't supposed to be, but a small town in the mountains might be the perfect remedy for a broken heart. Checking out her landlord across the driveway just might cure it, too. The Tourist Attraction By Sarah Morgenthaler, DB100805 it has always been Zoe's dream to take a vacation in Alaska. One day in the mountain town of Moose Springs, and she's smitten with the town and grumpy diner owner Graham. Graham hates tourists, but Zoe might just make him change his mind. The Simple Wild by K.A. tucker, DB93 876 Looking to connect with the dying father she hasn't seen in years, city girl Kala heads to the remote Alaskan town where she was born. She forms a connection with pilot Jonah, who has been keeping her father's charter plane company afloat. Archer's Voice by Mia Sheridan, DB127057 When Bree Prescott arrives in the sleepy lakeside town of Pillion, Maine, she hopes against hope that this is the place where she will finally find the peace she so desperately seeks. On her first day there, her life collides with Archer Hale, an isolated man who holds a secret agony of his own, a man no one else sees. Archer's Voice is the story of a woman chained to the memory of one horrifying night and a man whose love is key to her freedom. It is a story of a silent man who lives with an excruciating wound and the woman who helps him find his voice. It is a story of suffering, fate, and the transformative power of love. [00:06:48] Speaker A: No More Secrets By Lucy Score, DB105682 when stylish big city journalist Summer Lentz comes to the small, quirky town of Blue Moon Bend to do a story on Pierce Farms, she meets Carter Pierce, a wounded veteran. It seems the two have nothing in common, but the town matchmakers think differently. It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey, DB104937 after her sister has to bail her out of jail, Los Angeles socialite Piper's stepfather exiles them both to the coastal Washington town where they were born. When Piper meets local fisherman Brendan, there is an immediate attraction, but Brendan is sure Piper will leave Drive Me Wild By Melanie Harlow, DB113745 When Blair Beaufort literally crashes into Bellamy Creek wearing a ball gown and a tiara, I should have towed her car, said good night, and sent her packing. I'm a mechanic, not a hotel manager. I've got enough on my plate trying to keep my shop from going under, my overbearing mother off my back, and my baseball team in contention for the league championship. I don't have time for a forward debutante with zero street smarts and a cash flow problem, even if she is crazy beautiful. Problem is, she's stranded in my small town and I'm hiding a protective streak underneath my grumpy exterior that runs deep. So I offer her a place to stay and keep my hands to myself for exactly one night. If only she weren't so gorgeous, so funny, so eager to please. She's a disaster behind the wheel but she drives me wild without even trying at work, at home in the back of my truck I can't get enough of the way she makes me feel But I know better than to think it can last. She wants a fairy tale and I'm no prince so when it comes time for her to leave, there's nothing I can do but let her go no matter how much it hurts to say goodbye. [00:08:48] Speaker C: For June, our magazine of the month is National Geographic History. This exciting new addition to our collection, first made available last month, explores over 5,000 years of people and places dive into history from Caesar to Napoleon, the Pyramids to the Pantheon and the Trojan War to the Civil War. Published bimonthly, six issues a year. It is also available in audio format, on cartridge or for download through Bard. [00:09:16] Speaker B: Hello and welcome to this month's Tech Tip. I'm Leland and this month I wanted to talk about using your NLS eReader as a Braille display, how you connect it to your device, and things to know. Let's get started. You may be wondering what devices the NLS eReader can connect to. Currently, the NLS eReader can connect to computers, iPhones and iPads. There is an update that will bring support to Android devices using Android 15 along with some Apple TVs later this year. For the ereader to work with these devices, a screen reader must be running this is because the Braille display shows what is read by the screen reader. Connecting the ereader to a device is easy. It uses the same steps as other Bluetooth devices. The exact steps are as follows. From the main menu go to Braille Display Add Bluetooth device. At this point you'll see a message telling you to switch to the device you're connecting to, also known as the host device on the other device. Navigate to your settings Bluetooth and locate the option to add a Bluetooth device. From there, find the name of the NLS eReader and the connection will be complete. Note when using your E reader as a Braille display, commands change based on the screen reader being used. You'll be able to use these new commands to operate the connected device. Also, the small round select button on the front of your ereader becomes a disconnect button. Use this to end the connection and return to Using your E reader to read books Using your NLS ereader as a Braille display opens the doors to having more Braille in your everyday life. As always, feel free to give us a call if you have troubles or questions about using your E reader as a Braille display. [00:11:52] Speaker D: Hello Sarah here with this month's staff pick. Due to some traveling, driving and my to be read bookshelf getting way too full, I'm reading three books right now. I'm listening to an audiobook reading one on my Kindle. This is great at track meets and toting along to read outside. And one hard copy book. All a form of a cozy mystery. My favorite genre. I wanted to share one of my recent reads today that I had just finished. It is called how to solve your own murder By Kristin Perrin, DB120193. Here is the summary provided by the publisher. A dual narrative feel good mystery in which a woman, Frances, spends a lifetime trying to prevent her murder as predicted by a fortune teller at a county fair when she was just 17. When she is in fact murdered nearly 60 years later, her great niece Annie must solve the crime to avenge her great aunt's death and in doing so uncovers the dark heart of a quaint English village of Castle Knoll where she might just find herself in the path of a killer. For me, it was the combination of the characters, the English setting, and the dual narrative that I really enjoyed. It also had quite the list of colorful and suspicious characters for Annie to investigate as she tries to solve two murders, one from the past and one from the present. If you're a fan of cozy mysteries and amateur sleuths. You will enjoy this read. Also, if you are a fan of Knives out and the Thursday Murder Club, you might enjoy this title as well. It is the first in a series, the Castle Knoll Series. The second book is out and is called how to Seal youl own fate DB 129016 and NLS will be adding it to the collection soon. Thanks.
