[00:00:16] Speaker A: Greetings, readers. Welcome to the first October edition of Library News. This month we discuss Dyslexia awareness month, Bard top 10 nonfiction, the Return of Makerspace Monday, and much more.
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Did you know that dyslexia is the most common learning disability? It accounts for over 80% of all learning disabilities. Kids do not outgrow dyslexia. It can be remediated by the right kind of instruction, but symptoms do not go away just because a child grows up. Kids with dyslexia grow up to be adults with dyslexia.
Individuals of all ages with dyslexia are eligible for library services from the Iowa Library for the Blind and Print Disabled. If you know someone with dyslexia who might benefit from our services, encourage them to apply.
To learn more about dyslexia, visit decodingdyslexiaiowa.org or to access our library application, go.
[00:01:11] Speaker B: To IowaLibrary.blog this October we celebrate the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an annual recognition of the positive impact of people with disabilities on and the American workforce.
This yearly event began in 1945 as a week long national observance of the contributions of people with physical disabilities.
In 1988, Congress designated the commemoration as NDEAM, which then evolved to acknowledge the importance of increasing opportunities for people with disabilities, including those with mental health conditions and other non obvious disabilities in the workforce.
Celebrating value and talent is the theme of this year's National Disability Employment Awareness Month. To learn more about the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, go to dol.gov ndeam now for the top.

Coined During World War I, SNAFU is an acronym that stands for Situation Normal All F'd Up.

Spanning from the 1950s to the 2000s, Ed Helm steps in as an unofficial history teacher for a deep dive into each decade's craziest snafus. From planting nukes on the moon to training felines as CIA spies to weaponizing the weather, this book will unpack the incredibly ironic, decision making and hilariously terrifying aftermath of America's biggest mishaps.
Filled with sharp humor, SNAFU is a wild ride through time that not only entertains but but offers fresh insights that just might prevent history from repeating itself again and again.

[00:05:05] Speaker A: Class Clown DB130141 by Dave Barry America's most beloved wise ass finally tells his story with all the humor you'd expect from a man who made a career out of making fun of pretty much everything.
How does the son of a Presbyterian minister wind up winning a Pulitzer Prize for writing a wildly inaccurate newspaper column read by millions of people?
In Class Clown, Dave Barry takes us on a hilarious ride, starting with a childhood largely spent throwing rocks for entertainment there was no Internet, and preparing for nuclear war by hiding under a classroom desk. After literally getting elected class clown in high school, he went to college where, as an English major, he read snippets of great literature when he was not busy playing in a rock band. It was the 60s. He began his journalism career at a small town Pennsylvania newspaper where he learned the most important rule of local never confuse a goose with a duck.
Class Clown isn't just a memoir, it's a vibrant celebration of life rich with humor, absurdity, joy and sadness.
Sound Effects how sound shapes our lives, our well being, and our planet. DB130330 by Julian Treasure Hearing is the first sense we develop a primary warning instinct hardwired into our brains. And yet in an increasingly noisy and distracted world, most people pay very little attention to sound.
In school we teach reading and writing, but not listening. Conscious listening is rare and with over half the world's population now living in cities, billions of people never experience the rich and health enhancing sounds of the natural world.
Every day, the sounds around us affect our experience and fundamentally alter our quality of life, for better or worse. In four sections, Geonophy, the Sounds of the Planet, Biophony, the Great Animal Orchestra, Anthropomophy, the Sounds of Humanity and Silence A Sound in its own right. This book will help readers rediscover the wonder of sound and understand how powerfully it affects us, whether we're paying attention or not. It will also offer readers a manual for taking back responsibility for the sounds we consume and the sounds we make so we can enhance our own happiness.
Original Sin President Biden's decline, its cover up and His Disastrous Choice to run again DB129816 by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson Joe Biden launched his successful 2020 bid for the White House with the stated goal of saving the nation from a second Trump presidential term.
He, his family and his senior aides were so convinced that only he could beat Trump again, they lied to themselves, allies and the public about his condition and limitations.
At his debate with Trump on June 27, 2024, the consequences of that deception were exposed to the world. It was shocking and upsetting. Now the full, unsettling truth is being told for the first time. Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson take us behind closed doors and into private conversations between the heaviest of hitters, revealing how big the problem was and how many people knew about it. From White House staffers at the highest to lowest levels, to leaders of Congress and the Cabinet, from governors to donors and Hollywood players, the truth is finally being told. What you will learn makes President Biden's decision to run for re election seem shockingly narcissistic, self delusional and reckless. A desperate bet that went bust and part of a larger act of extended public deception that has few precedents. The story the authors tell raises fundamental issues of accountability and responsibility that will continue for decades.
[00:08:46] Speaker B: Raised by a serial killer Discovering the Truth about my father DB 129900 by April Bellacio the untold story behind the hit true crime podcast the Clearing this unforgettable memoir traces one daughter's moving quest to understand her larger than life childhood as she searches for the truth about her father, the serial killer Edward Wayne Edwards.
One evening in 2009, April Bellacio was searching online, as she had been every night, for unsolved murders in the towns her family had lived growing up, when she stumbled across the latest investigations into the Sweetheart Murders Cold Case. All at once the buried memories of her father's dark history were awakened, and she knew she had to take action. She picked up the phone to call a detective, and the rest is infamous true crime history.
In her unflinching memoir, Bellacio bravely reveals an astonishing tale of a lifetime of manipulation, unexplained upheavals, and silent fear. Some part of her had always known what her father was capable of, but the full truth of how she came to these revelations is as riveting as it is quietly terrifying.
Through searching, storytelling, dedicated research, and intimate insight, Raised by a Serial Killer is a gripping, courageous memoir unlike any other.
The Weight of Glory and other addresses DB129906 by CS Lewis collects nine of Lewis's sermons and speeches on aspects of Christian faith, ethics, love and theology.
A Murder in Hollywood the untold story of Tinseltown's most shocking crime DB130938 by Casey Sherman the dark story behind the bright lights of Tinseltown from the outside, Hollywood starlet Lana Turner seemed to have it all a thriving film career, a beautiful daughter, and the kind of fame and fortune that most people could only dream of. But when the famous femme fatale began dating mobster Johnny Sampato, thug for the infamous west coast mob boss Mickey Cohen, her personal life became violent and unpredictable. Lana's teenage daughter, Cheryl, watched her beloved mother's life deteriorate as Stampato's intense jealousy took over. Eventually, the physical and emotional abuse became too much to bear, and Lana attempted to break it off with Johnny with disastrous consequences.
The details of what happened that fateful night remained foggy, but it ended in a series of frantic phone calls and Sampato dead on Lana's bedroom floor, with Cheryl claiming to have plunged a knife into his abdomen in an attempt to protect her mother. The subsequent investigation made for the biggest headlines of the year, its drama eclipsing every Hollywood movie. God never gives up on you. What Jacob's story teaches us about grace, mercy, and God's relentless love. Bible Study Guide 5 Sessions DB12 8520 by Max Licado and Andrea L. Ramsey Ever wonder if you've stumbled one too many times for God to use someone like you? Could you benefit from an encounter with God's unending, unbending, unswerving love and devotion? If your answer is yes, it's time for you to see how God's grace transformed Jacob's life. And if you feel undeserving of God's grace, this book will serve as a refresher course on God's perfect plan to use imperfect people to do great things.
God never gives up on you is for the strugglers among us and the fumbler within us. For those of us who are part saint, part scoundrel. We mean well, but we don't always do well. We have breakthroughs and breakdowns, often in the same hour.
We need no reminder of our failures. But where can we find examples of God's steadfast grace? No one is more suited to help assure you of God's grace than Jacob. He was less a prodigy and more a prodigal. Strong on savvy, weak on conscience, Jacob took advantage of his famished brother and pulled the wool over the eyes of his dying father. Yet God never turned his back on Jacob.
And he won't turn his back on you.
